Frequently Asked Questions
Is my data really private?
Yes. Your data is encrypted on your device before it ever reaches our servers. We use AES-256-GCM encryption with keys derived from your password. We literally cannot read your medical records - and that's intentional.
What happens if I forget my password?
With the Sync service, you'll have a recovery code (like a 24-word phrase) that can restore your account. Store this somewhere safe - without it, a forgotten password means lost data. This is the trade-off for true privacy.
Can I use Recordwell without an internet connection?
Absolutely. The free version works completely offline. All your data is stored locally on your device. The Sync service adds cloud backup and multi-device access, but it's never required.
Is Recordwell HIPAA compliant?
Recordwell is a personal project, not enterprise healthcare software. We've designed it with strong privacy in mind, but we don't make HIPAA compliance claims. Use it for personal and family health tracking, not clinical practice.
How do I export my data?
In the app settings, you'll find export options. You can export encrypted backups (password-protected) or decrypted JSON files. The format is documented so you can process it however you like.
Can I self-host the backend?
That's on our roadmap! The backend will be open source and designed for self-hosting. See the Architecture page for our planned approach.
